چکیده

We develop a consistent model of the accretion shock region in Classical T Tauri Stars (CTTSs). The initial conditions of the post-shock flow are determined by the irradiated shock precursor and the ionization state is calculated without assuming ionization equilibrium. Comparison with observations of the C IV resonance lines (λλ 1550 Å) for CTTSs indicate that the post-shock emission predicted by the model is too large, for a reasonable range of parameters. If the model is to reproduce the observations, C IV emission from CTTSs has to be dominated by pre-shock emission, for stars with moderate to large accretion rates. For stars with low accretion rates, the observations suggest a comparable contribution between the preand post-shock regions. These conclusions are consistent with previous results indicating that the post-shock will be buried under the stellar photosphere for moderate to large accretion rates.

REDSHIFTED ABSORPTION AT He i k10830 AS A PROBE OF THE ACCRETION GEOMETRY OF T TAURI STARS

We probe the geometry of magnetospheric accretion in classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) by modeling red absorption at He i k10830 via scattering of the stellar and veiling continua. Under the assumptions that the accretion flow is an azimuthally symmetric dipole and helium is sufficiently optically thick that all incident 1 m radiation is scattered, we illustrate the sensitivity of He i k10830 red...

Turbulence-driven Polar Winds from T Tauri Stars Energized by Magnetospheric Accretion

Pre-main-sequence stars are observed to be surrounded by both accretion flows and some kind of wind or jet-like outflow. Recent work by Matt and Pudritz has suggested that if classical T Tauri stars exhibit stellar winds with mass loss rates about 0.1 times their accretion rates, the wind can carry away enough angular momentum to keep the stars from being spun up unrealistically by accretion. T...

X-ray optical depth diagnostics of T Tauri accretion shocks

Context. In classical T Tauri stars, X-rays are produced by two plasma components: a hot low-density plasma, with frequent flaring activity, and a high-density lower temperature plasma. The former is coronal plasma related to the stellar magnetic activity. The latter component, never observed in non-accreting stars, could be plasma heated by the shock formed by the accretion process. However it...

X-ray emission from dense plasma in CTTSs: Hydrodynamic modeling of the accretion shock

Context. High spectral resolution X-ray observations of classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) demonstrate the presence of plasma at T ∼ 2−3×106 K and ne ∼ 1011−1013 cm−3, unobserved in non-accreting stars. Stationary models suggest that this emission is due to shockheated accreting material, but they do not allow to analyze the stability of such material and its position in the stellar atmosphere. Ai...

A Critique of Current Magnetic-Accretion Models for Classical T Tauri Stars

Current magnetic-accretion models for classical T-Tauri stars rely on a strong, dipolar magnetic field of stellar origin to funnel the disk material onto the star, and assume a steady-state. In this paper, I critically examine the physical basis of these models in light of the observational evidence and our knowledge of magnetic fields in low-mass stars, and find it lacking. I also argue that m...
